In the Master’s Programme in Applied Cultural Analysis, students are trained in ethnographical fieldwork and cultural analysis. Students learn how to use these theoretical and methodological skills as a means of supporting organisations and businesses as well as municipal and community-based actors to develop their services, products and public outreach programmes. Students also gain an advanced understanding of how to interpret, handle and approach different cultural contexts, and perspectives on project management and communication. The programme works in close cooperation with clients from both the public and private sectors and NGOs. For many students, the programme functions as preparation for and a gateway to PhD studies.

This interdisciplinary programme is aimed at students who, after their undergraduate studies, want to gain area expertise on contemporary East and South-East Asia. The programme offers students an opportunity to specialise regionally and thematically. Students choose a country or a region of focus in East and South-East Asia but also read courses that are more general and deal with cross-regional issues. During the fourth semester, you will have the possibility to travel to Asia to carry out fieldwork and collect material for your Master's thesis.

The Master of Science in Development Studies is an interdisciplinary social science Master’s programme focusing on problems of poverty and development. The objective of the programme is to provide you with background knowledge and practical skills to understand, assess and work in development-related fields, whether in direct poverty reduction or in other aspects of social, economic and institutional development. You will acquire a critical social science approach and will conduct your own research within the context of the Master’s thesis. Previous students have worked, for example, at embassies across the world, in governmental and non-governmental development agencies within the UN and the EU and in various NGOs, and in the private sector.

LUMID is an interdisciplinary programme focusing on international development and management. The programme offers students a unique combination of theoretical knowledge, applied research methods and management skills pertaining to a range of current development areas. Seventy per cent of our students find work within the development sector within a year of graduating. Our alumni have successfully gained employment in an extensive number of development organisations worldwide, ranging from multilateral organisations (e.g. various UN agencies) and international aid and cooperation agencies (e.g. Sida) to non-governmental organisations. LUMID is a member of the Global Association for Master’s in Development Practice (MDP).

As the first European Affairs programme in Sweden (established in 1994), we offer a unique combination of courses, covering topics such as European governance, EU negotiations, EU law, and Europe in global affairs. The programme presents major cultural, economic, political and socio-psychological theories and concepts to enable you to make informed, comparative analyses of how globalisation is linked to conflict and social change. Previous students have, for example, undertaken internship placements at embassies and at international NGOs, private companies and the public sector.

The Bachelor’s programme in Development Studies is interdisciplinary and focuses on economic, social and political processes and their links to development cooperation. The aim is to provide the knowledge needed in order to critically examine and understand the preconditions for, and process of, development. The programme draws on four different scientific traditions: sociology, political science, human geography and economic history. Students gain background knowledge needed to prepare for graduate and doctoral studies, as well as working in development-related fields at government agencies, private firms or NGOs.

Drawing on fields such as anthropology, geography, sociology and economic history, the programme provides interdisciplinary perspectives and analytical tools for communicating about problems of sustainability. It represents an important complement to technological and natural science approaches by focusing on the cultural dimensions of consumption and resource use and social science perspectives on the global distribution of environmental problems. This programme is unique in combining perspectives on sustainability from the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. It brings together lecturers and students from various backgrounds in discussions about human-environmental relations.

The Master of Arts Programme in European Studies is an interdisciplinary Master´s programme with a unique perspective on Europe. The programme specifically targets those who are interested in understanding Europe from a broader, humanist point of view and who want to apply this perspective in careers related to European cultural and identity politics and Europe-wide communication. Our focus lies on culture, identity and communication, addressed with both theoretical sophistication and career pragmatism. Thus, our programme offers a solid theoretical foundation for the study of European culture and identity and develops students’ practical skills through a project management course and the possibility of internships.

With these skills in social science and gender analysis, you will be able to formulate and analyse interconnections between theory and practice concerning gender, class, ethnicity and sexuality.
