Biotechnology is a key enabling technology that impacts various sectors, such as healthcare and pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food and feed, environmental remediation, as well as the production of chemicals and biofuels. This programme connects fundamental research with its applications and integrates genetics, gene technology, cell biology, molecular biology and molecular biotechnology. The common basis is within molecular genetics, which is the discipline that explains how the information in the genes is expressed and how it can give rise to various traits in an organism. Emphasis is put on genetic mechanisms underlying disease, genetic mapping, molecular genetic techniques and diagnostic methods. Training in entrepreneurship and processes of innovation and commercialisation in the molecular biotechnology field provides a fundamental base for careers in biotechnology and the pharmaceutical industry. A majority of the graduated students continue with PhD studies, often within the biomedical research field.
